Gregg Popovich Finding ‘Real Joy’ in Spurs Record Losing Streak

Despite losing 14 straight games into the All-Star Break, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is still finding the joy in coaching.

Even though the San Antonio Spurs have one of the worst records in the league, five-time NBA championship coach Gregg Popovich is enjoying himself.

"Watching them develop is what the real joy is in a group like this,” Popovich said in a recent press conference

The Spurs are limping into the All-Star Break, recently breaking their own record for the longest losing streak in franchise history, dropping a 14th-consecutive game to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. The team also has nearly half of its roster on the injury report, making it difficult for the Spurs to win games.

Regarding San Antonio’s rebuilding roster, Popovich likened it to being patient while raising children.

“It’s about teaching them individually what it takes to be in the NBA, develop their skills, and then teach them how it fits with a team and how to play with each other,” Popovich said.

San Antonio touts one of the youngest rosters in the NBA, and following a trade deadline where they shipped away veterans, their young roster will get a chance to shine.

With players like Charles Bassey earning a new contract and 19-year-old rookies Jeremy Sochan and Malaki Branham proving to be two of the best players in their draft class, the Spurs’ future looks to be in good hands under Popovich’s tutelage.
