Spurs Have Ton of Value Despite Low Price Tag

Victor Wembanyama helps the San Antonio Spurs' value skyrocket.

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs have a lot of value in the city, but compared to the rest of the league ... not so much.

The top seven most valuable clubs are all either in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco-Oakland or Chicago. The New York Knicks could lose 70 games and still be in the top five. No matter whether Nelson Rockefeller, the Dolan Brothers or Bozo the Clown governed the Knicks, they'd still be in the top five simply on geography alone.

But it's the rest of that list that always delivers the most juice for the talk show host or the columnist or rival fans in the same state.

When I first moved to San Antonio in 2007, the Spurs were the 10th most valuable team in the league. Not bad for a small market that had to get to the conference finals just to get on national television. Of course, the club was coming off winning another championship with a seven game sweep of new kid LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers. Fast forward to now and the franchise has fallen all the way to 19th, sandwiched between the Atlanta Hawks and the Utah Jazz. The Hawks are steeped in SEC football country and practically have to put on minor league baseball bits to entice people to attend their games. The Jazz suffer from, well, being in Utah.

If the Spurs are going to climb back to the top of the "outside the top five markets" in terms of value, all of the pieces are in place.

Victor Wembanyama's Bowman rookie card has already been priced at $100k so one can only imagine what his impact financially will be on the club in all categories. The organization is scouting several possible spots to build a new arena that will no doubt be one of the more technologically advanced home gyms in the NBA.

The highest ranking governor hasn't turned 40 yet and his primary partner is computer king Michael Dell. New practice facility, home games in Austin and Mexico City, new arena in the works and of course Wemby.

They may currently sit towards the bottom of the league in value, but if you could buy stocks in NBA franchises, I could provide a pretty safe tip. Put whatever you have in the Spurs.
