REPORT: The 49ers have "Inquired" about Jamal Adams

Grant Cohn

I told you.

A couple weeks ago, I reported that trade talks between the 49ers and Jets for All Pro strong safety Jamal Adams were “picking up steam.”

According to Sports Illustrated’s Corbin Smith, who cites multiple sources, “Seattle and San Francisco have both had preliminary discussions with the New York Jets about the availability of disgruntled star safety Jamal Adams.”

That’s what “picking up steam” means. The 49ers apparently have interest and have made inquiries about Adams, as have the Seahawks, after Adams listed both teams among the seven he would accept a trade to.

This news should come as no surprise.

Of course the 49ers and and Seahawks have shown interest in Adams -- they’d be nuts not to want him. He’s available, and he’s great. He instantly would become the leader of whichever team trades for him -- the 49ers or the Seahawks.

And he would tip the balance of power in the NFC West. If the Seahawks get Adams, they probably would win the NFC West. And if the 49ers get Adams, they almost certainly would win the division and probably the Super Bowl, too. They’d be the best team in the entire league. And Adams would be their best defensive player.

So there’s double incentive for the 49ers to trade for Adams: To add a great player at a position of need, and to prevent a division rival from doing the same.

The Jets obviously don’t want to trade Adams -- he’s forcing his way off that team. So they probably will drag their feet and make Adams wait. But if he doesn’t drop his trade demand -- and why would he? -- then the Jets most likely will trade him before the trade deadline.

And the 49ers should be the team to get him.

Seems like they agree.

Ah, the good old, whiney, petulant Grant comes shining through... Missed ya buddy!

Yes, he would be a good get from a talent standpoint. Not sure I buy the "leader" and "tip the balance" aspects. Either way though, Marathe would have to pull off one his greatest cap Houdini acts of all time to make it work. Guess we'll see!

Once again Grant, you're off the mark. Adams won't come cheap. Cap space IS the issue - always is after the free agent/draft frenzy. And, again, there is n guarantee of future success with another team- just a different team. As good as Adams has been, there are other pressing needs - like paying RM. Also, another, less expensive option could come along in the next few months.

If we’re talking about winning Superbowls as your mentioning I’m pretty sure Jamal Adams wouldn’t be able to cover Sammy Watkins, Travis Kelsey, and for sure Tyrek Hill because if the 49ers somehow make it back to the SB which history tells us is very difficult it’ll probably be against the Chiefs.

You may want to re watch the Super Bowl. KC killed us on a lot of short yardage runs and Mahomes ran wild on us outside the pocket. I guarantee you if we had Adams at safety that Damien Williams wouldn’t of ran for 100 yards and caught that touchdown pass out the backfield to take the lead. He’s a better blitzer and ball hawk than any of our safetys. Our only safety to have an interception all year was Tavarious Moore who was the backup!

Oh I did watch it actually 3 times after that it was to painful to watch it anymore and it’s funny to me that you seem to be blaming the defense after they held the nfls most explosive offense to 10 points all the way to 3 quarters in a half I mean if the offense could’ve just gotten one good drive in the 4 th quarter the 49ers would’ve had there 6th Lombard not to mention Jimmy Gs overthrow.

I’m not blaming the defense they are the reason we got to this Super Bowl I agree. The pass rush and our running game is what got us there. Mostert should of got more carries and we should of closed it out with Mostert running it down there throat when we had 20-10 lead. The defense played good enough to beat KC. I’m just saying on a lot of those runs and passes that Mahomes killed us on we would of had a better chance of stopping if we had Jamal Adams. And yes, the offense failed in the 4th Quarter that is was why we lost. Bourne ran the wrong route that killed one drive, jimmy threw a batted ball killed another drive, then Jimmy missed wide open Sanders when he had other
Open receivers that killed the last drive. The offense should of put up more than 20 points. That wasn’t good enough.

I agree and man you had to bring up all the miss plays from that day and remind me of my nightmare of that game but your right. It’s all good

Wrong! He would not be the best player on the 49ers defense Nick Bosa was and is the heart and soul of this defense even when Buckner was here PERIOD!

Mostert for Adams.

Yes Adams and Sherman would be the only 2 defenders on the Niners defense to be 1st team All-Pro. Just imagine those 2 locking down one side of the field together with our ferocious pass rush. It would be like the 85’ Bears defense. JA is a difference maker that could make this Niners defense an all time great if he landed here. The fact that Seattle wants him too makes it even more important now. Kill two birds with one stone by acquiring the best safety in football and not letting our division rivals get him.

The hyperbole in this article is absurd and makes you seem like a random sensationalist commenter (raises hand) and not a respectable sports journalist. Maybe you're joking? If so, that's not coming through.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Your conclusions are way ahead of your facts. Adams immediately becomes "the leader" of whichever team acquires him? Uh, both these teams have strong veteran leadership. "Tips the balance of power in the NFC west?" This one player? I doubt that. "Almost certainly would win the division and probably the Super Bowl, too?" Come on Grant. I think you're in LUV. Yes Adams is a fine player, and I'd love to acquire him and not the Seahawks, but he does not possess supernatural abilities. I think your tie is too tight. Go back to sweaters.

Immediately becomes the 49ers Best Defensive Player? I think you are forgetting about a few people here... Bosa is the easy one. But Sherman, Bosa, Dee Ford and Armstead are at least as valuable - particularly because of the position they play.
