Bears Trade Rumor Revolves Around Houston

The Texans trading up from No. 12 to get the No. 9 pick from the Bears is suggested but there are problems with such a move.

Already rumored heavily with the Pittsburgh Steelers in a possible trade back from No. 9, the Bears are getting some more trade consideration in another rumor.

This one packs far less punch than the Bears trading back to No. 17 with the Steelers rumor of last week for a few reasons.

It's a potential swap with Houston and moving back to No. 12 to take the Texans' second pick of the first round.

This is a rumor coming from Todd McShay of ESPN while talking to ESPN AM-1000's Waddle and Silvy, and it's not really based on anything involving the Bears other than they could be an option for the Texans in a deal if they identified a quarterback they wanted to draft in Round 1 after they already decided not to take one with the second pick.

"I already know they've made the one move to nine, but you've got Houston sitting there at 12 and a lot of rumors that they're not going to take a quarterback at that No. 2 spot," McShay told Waddle&Silvy. "They pick again at 12. Tennessee is at 11.

"If Houston doesn't take a quarterback and one of the quarterbacks is still on the board when they get 9-10 in that range, they can be a team that tries to get up ahead of Tennessee to go get that quarterback."

McShay also theorized it's a good place for the Bears to trade back to and still come away with one of the top tackles in the draft.

Problems with this Idea

All of this is logical, but there are flaws to it.

For one, the Bears probably wouldn't get very much trading back to No. 12 from No. 9. It would be unlikely to net them even a third-round pick unless they gave up something else.

The draft value board calls the difference between No. 9 and 12 150 points. At 150 points, the Bears would need to throw in another pick themselves just to square the deal away because the Texans don't really have a pick worth 150. They have a third-rounder worth 265 at No. 65, one spot after the Bears pick at No. 64. The Texans also have the 104th pick in Round 4 but it's only worth 86 points.

Another reason for not moving back is if the Bears actually have one of those offensive linemen graded far better than the others, they would have to sweat out Tennessee taking that player. If the Texans have moved up and taken the quarterback the Titans would have wanted, it leaves Tennessee looking at another need and tackle is one of those.

Just because some mock drafts put a group of four tackles as going off the board in similar spots doesn't mean the Bears have these four tackles graded similarly.

On the Other Hand

In a way, it does make more sense than the Steelers trade because in that one the Bears might not even be able to come away with one of the top tackles if they move all the way back to 17, and could be considering defensive linemen Calijah Kancey, Lukas Van Ness or Nolan Smith.

One other potential problem is maybe a quarterback doesn't drop and four are taken early. Then Houston wouldn't even be trying to trade.

Whathever happens, it's all going to first revolve around whether Jalen Carter gets taken before he reaches the Bears at No. 9. Because if he does, they could take him or move back with Pittsburgh.

If he is drafted by Seattle at No. 5, then it's possible the Bears are in deal-back mode with the Texans.

It's going to be a tense early first round whatever way you look at it.
