NFL Passes Up Browns Proposal Trade Deadline Proposal But Approve New Date

The NFL officially adopted a new trade deadline at the annual league owner's meetings on Tuesday, shifting the date by just one week. Browns general manager Andrew Berry advocated for a two week adjustment to the deadline.

Half of Andrew Berry's wish came true at the annual NFL owner's meetings.

Several weeks removed from Berry sharing that the Browns were spearheading a movement to adjust the trade deadline by two weeks on the regular season calendar, the league officially adopted a new trade deadline on Tuesday. It wasn't Berry's proposal though, which would have shifted the deadline to the Tuesday after Week 10 of the season.

Instead, the league opted for a more conservative option proposed by Pittburgh, agreeing to a one-week adjustment that officially sets the 2024 trade deadline for the Tuesday after Week 9, or Nov. 5.

Prior to the new deadline being approved, Berry told a group of reporters in Orlando that he felt the less aggressive proposal had more momentum than the one he's been advocating for. He added that he'd count any shift in the date as progress but that doesn't mean Berry's giving up the fight.

“I think it feels more aggressive than it actually is [to some], Berry told reporters. "So, people are just scared of this football apocalypse where everybody’s trading away their best players and you have the haves and have-nots. And I think the second element is that you do have a number of franchises that are just maybe a little bit more resistant to change.”

Moving the deadline one week later is a happy medium for now. As Berry mentioned, for those who felt a two week shift was perhaps too ambitious at the moment, being able to propose it as only a one week shift could make help his case in the future.

Berry will have to wait to plead his case again at next year's owner's meetings. At the very least, this adopted shift accounts for the league adding a 17th game to the schedule in 2021 but never adjusting the trade deadline accordingly.
