Cleveland Browns rookie punter Jamie Gillan has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September. The "Scottish Hammer" is tied for 2nd in the NFL with 11 punts inside the 20 and his 20 punts have only been returned a total of 19 yards.

Gillan's story is remarkable, moving from Scotland to the United States, ending up at Arkansas Pine-Bluff for college and then getting a draft tryout with the Cleveland Browns, getting invited to training camp and then beating out excellent veteran Britton Colquitt to now winning an honor in his first month of playing.

The talent was obvious. He has an incredibly strong leg, so the entire question about Gillan was the finer points of punting, placing the ball, not outkicking his coverage and then holding. So far, none of these have been an issue. He's shanked a punt, but other than that, he's stepped in and immediately looked the part of a good NFL punter. And in this case, good enough to be recognized for it.

The Browns are getting set to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. The last time the Browns were on Monday Night Football, they beat the New York Jets and Jamie Gillan was named AFC Special Teams player of the week.
