Cardinals Still Rank Near Top of NFL in Cap Space

The Arizona Cardinals have spent some money this offseason - and they still have plenty moving forward.

ARIZONA -- The Arizona Cardinals still rank near the top of NFL cap space available after free agency frenzy has come and gone for the team.

According to Spotrac, Arizona's Top 51 cap space ranks sixth in the league:

Top 51 Remaining NFL Cap Space

  1. New England Patriots ($47.4 million)
  2. Washington Commanders ($43.8 million)
  3. Tennessee Titans ($34.7 million)
  4. Philadelphia Eagles ($32.4 million)
  5. Los Angeles Chargers ($31.5 million)
  6. Arizona Cardinals ($29.7 million)
  7. Detroit Lions ($26.9 million)
  8. Kansas City Chiefs ($26.4 million)
  9. Las Vegas Raiders ($25.2 million)
  10. Cincinnati Bengals ($24.5 million)

During the offseason, only the top 51 most expensive contracts count against the salary cap. This changes once the regular season begins and final 53 man rosters are finalized.

When it comes to effective cap space (which subtracts salary needed to sign the upcoming draft class) the Cardinals' $17.9 million ranks 11th in the league according to Over The Cap. Arizona has a total of 11 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft with six coming in the first three rounds, two of those selections belonging in the first round.

The Cardinals didn't quite snag any big fish free agents but did manage to sure up some spots on the defensive side of the ball. Guys such as Bilal Nichols and Justin Jones were added to bolster the defensive line while Mack Wilson was brought in to roam sideline to sideline with Kyzir White. As for the secondary, Sean Murphy-Bunting now arrives to the cornerback room with Super Bowl pedigree and upside still left to build on.

Teams typically like to carry a few extra million in cap space heading into the regular season in case an emergency signing is needed, and with Arizona's massive draft class expected to eat some salary, it looks as if the Cardinals are mostly done making moves between now and the draft, which begins on April 25.
