Chargers GM Reveals Team is Still Looking at Adding Specific Defensive Position

The Los Angeles Chargers offseason is one of the most crucial the franchise has seen in some time. After a disappointing 5-12 season in 2023, the Bolts decided quickly that they wanted a regime change.

Jim Harbaugh was hired on as the new head coach and Joe Hortiz was named the new general manager of the club. They both are tasked with getting the Chargers back into a place of contention, but it won't be easy with the holes along the roster.

The team has added a few pieces in free agency, but they still have needs to address. One area is at the cornerback position, with Hortiz hinting that the team is still exploring different options at the position.

"Certainly, we haven't hit it yet but we're still talking to corners," Hortiz said. "Hoping make some headway there."

Los Angeles just signed cornerback Kristian Fulton, a former second-round pick of the Tennessee Titans out of LSU. But the Chargers need more help in the secondary.

Fulton gives the Bolts some nice depth to work with, but he hasn't lived up to his pre-draft hype. Last season with the Titans, Fulton put up 46 tackles with zero sacks and zero interceptions. Throughout his four-year career, he has posted 150 tackles, one sack and four interceptions.

Los Angeles needs more playmaking in the secondary to get themselves back into the postseason, especially given the strong AFC contenders. They will also look at the upcoming NFL Draft to address the cornerback position, something that Hortiz also mentioned.

"We'll sign corners, we'll draft corners and we'll always be looking for corners. That's a position you never stop chasing."

The Bolts may not turn things around right away, but they are building toward a more sustainable future. This new regime wants long-term success, rather than just a one or two-year window.
