Chargers News: LA Misses Out On All-Pro Safety

He would have been a great fit.

Your Los Angeles Chargers could really use some help on the defensive side of the field.

Frankly, their offense, too could use a boost. That’s what happens when your team finishes with a 5-12 record and fires its entire coaching staff and the head of its front office.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported this morning that former two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard recently met with Chicago Bears brass about possibly helping shore up the defense of the once-glorious Monsters of the Midway. Now, Rapoport reveals that Byard consulted with an unnamed other team today.

Now, it appears that Byard has made his decision. Per Dan Wiederer, Brad Briggs and Colleen Kane of The Chicago Tribune, he’s agreed to a two-year deal with the Bears, after all.

Should the Bolts have gotten in on the recruiting action?

The biggest impediment, of course, may have been that Los Angeles is far above the NFL’s salary cap, and as it looks to slash contracts, one wonders what the team — and specifically new general manager Joe Hortiz — will truly have an appetite for adding in free agency.
