Chargers News: Ball Hawk Safety On Cheap Deal Singled Out As LA Trade Prospect

He had five interceptions in 2021.

It's no secret that the Chargers' secondary hasn't played very well to start the 2023 season.

One of the main reasons for LA's 2-4 record comes down to the porous back half of their defense week in and week out.

A trade may be necessary to snap the Bolts out of this funk and one analyst suggested the team trade for a young option to help their safety depth with the deadline fast approaching.

Xavier McKinney, S, New York Giants

The Chargers’ safety depth is in flux with Raheem Layne out for the season with a torn ACL and JT Woods on the non-football illness list. Dean Marlowe, whom the Chargers signed to their practice squad, has exceeded expectations as a fill-in starter over the past three weeks. Plus, starter Alohi Gilman — who was back in practice on a limited basis Wednesday — appears to be making strides in his return from a heel injury that has kept him out since Week 3. The Chargers also claimed safety Jaylinn Hawkins off waivers from the Falcons last week. So safety might not be as pressing a concern. But McKinney is in the final year of his rookie deal and would bolster the safety depth with Layne out and Woods’ status uncertain.

The Alabama product has been a bright spot on an otherwise floundering Giant team as a starting safety for the NFC East squad.

New York's fourth-year man could be on the move after another great season with 30 individual tackles, six passes defended and a forced fumble through their first half.

Derwin James' regression on top of injuries and poor depth cloud LA's safety rotation this year but a trade for the former Crimson Tide standout could help the Bolts stay afloat in the playoff race.
