Chargers Should Target Recently Released Former Cowboys WR Michael Gallup

The Chargers need to kick the wheels on bringing in the recently released Michael Gallup.

The Los Angeles Chargers shocked the NFL world by trading their star WR Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears. After the longtime Bolts pass catcher declined to take a pay cut, he was shipped out East.

The business aspect of professional football can often be cold, and at the end of the day—teams will act in their best interest. Trading Allen, who is getting up in age was likely just the smartest move for the organization.

This release and Mike Williams being released has also put a significant stranglehold on the Chargers WR room.

Only Quentin Johnston, Derius Davis, Joshua Palmer, and Simi Fehoko are left. Naturally, this means the Chargers likely take one of the young and exciting talents coming out of the NFL Draft at pick #5.

Young talent is great, but there needs to be a veteran presence as well. One such player is former Cowboys WR Michael Gallup.

Gallup has been cut by the Cowboys in surprising fashion, and he is still a WR that can produce. He secured 418 yards and 2 TDs last season. He has sparingly been used simply because of how good CeeDee Lamb, Jake Ferguson, and Brandin Cooks have become as pass-catching threats.

Gallup has only secured 1,000+ yards in one season, which was in 2019. Since then, he has lessened his production practically every year since.

It could be that Gallup's usage has dropped simply because of the talent that exists on the Cowboys team. Another theory is that he was not being used in the proper way that highlights his skillset.

The Chargers could be the place where Gallup reinvigorates his career, and he is an option the team should explore.

Gallup could offer a deep threat for Justin Herbert while Quentin Johnston serves in the more intermediate YAC role.

Many free-agent receivers have already been taken by other teams, and Gallup being released just as the Chargers freed up more cap space with the Allen trade should result in a deep look at the former Cowboys WR.
