2024 NFL Mock Draft: Commanders Take QB?

The Washington Commanders could be eyeing a new franchise quarterback in next year's NFL Draft.

Even with the 2023 NFL Draft barely in the rear-view mirror, it's never too early to look at mock drafts for next year.

In The Athletic's 2024 NFL mock draft, they had the Commanders taking Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers with the No. 6 overall pick.

"Only a redshirt sophomore (plus he skipped his senior year of high school), Ewers is still very young in several areas," The Athletic writes. "But he has the top-shelf arm talent to make wow plays look routine. If the mental development catches up to his physical skills, Ewers will be an easy top-10 pick."

In his first season as a starter, Ewers threw for 2,177 yards and had 15 touchdowns compared to six interceptions in 10 games in 2022. He missed three games due to a shoulder injury.

If Washington is in a position to take a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, it'd likely be far from the only significant change bound to happen for the franchise.

It'd signal that the Sam Howell experiment didn't work for Washington. It could also mean that Commanders head coach Ron Rivera's time with the same has come to an end and general manager Martin Mayhew may not be far behind him. Those changes only become more likely if a potential new owner decides they want to clean house and bring in their own people.

If Ewers makes a jump in his redshirt sophomore season, he may be the guy to finally provide stability at quarterback for Washington for the first time since Kirk Cousins was under center.
