BREAKING: Los Angeles Chargers Fire Brandon Staley; Washington Commanders' Eric Bieniemy to Coach?

Brandon Staley has been fired by the Los Angeles Chargers. Could Washington Commanders assistant head coach Eric Bieniemy replace him?

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking for a new coach for the 2024 season.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chargers are firing Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco after a 5-9 start to the season. Last night, the Chargers were embarrassed on Thursday Night Football with a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, three days after their opponent failed to score in a 3-0 defeat.

Washington Commanders assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy walks down the sidelines during the first half against the Arizona Cardinals at FedExField.

Eric Bieniemy

Staley went 24-24 in parts of three seasons with the Chargers. He previously served as an outside linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears (2017-18) and Denver Broncos (2019) before becoming the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams (2020).

With the Chargers firing Staley, they will be looking to fill the vacancy, and they could do so with longtime head coaching candidate and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Bieniemy, 54, has quite the history with the Chargers. Not only did he face them twice a year as an offensive coach with the Kansas City Chiefs for a decade, but he was also drafted by the franchise in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft as a running back.

Bieniemy went on to play four seasons with the Chargers (1991-94) before another four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (1995-98) and one final run with the Philadelphia Eagles (1999).

Bieniemy has long been sought as a head coaching candidate for the past few years, and now that the Chargers are looking for one, it may be time for him to head back to where his career began.
