Commanders Sign QB Jacoby Brissett: Mentor or Competitor for Sam Howell?

The Commanders have signed Jacoby Brissett from the Cleveland Browns, but what will his job be in the nation's capital?

The Washington Commanders have reportedly signed Jacoby Brissett from the Cleveland Browns, per ESPN. The move gives the Commanders their second quarterback on the roster after Carson Wentz (cut) and Taylor Heinicke (Atlanta Falcons) were moved on.

After head coach Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy stated that young Sam Howell would get an opportunity to compete for the starting job in training camp, the addition of Brissett offers an interesting thought.

Will the veteran be a mentor or competition for Howell?

Both can be true, and given that Brissett is 30 years old, he brings a wealth of experience to the nation's capital.

That can be crucial for Howell, who is just starting his NFL journey. Having played just one regular season game against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18 last season, Howell looked competent as the team's starting quarterback.

With Brissett added to the roster, Howell can learn off a veteran who has been around the league for quite some time. Brissett is also no pushover, as he has shown glimpses of his talent.

While he can be seen as a good backup, that could prove vital to Howell as he learns his craft on the go. If things get bumpy, Washington has a capable backup quarterback with experience starting in the NFL to come in and diffuse the situation.

The move for Brissett wasn't what many expected, but it is a wise piece of business from the Commanders and could ultimately prove beneficial in the long run.

In a year that is shaping as a "see what we have with Howell," adding a veteran quarterback to the room to help ease that pressure is a clever move by the Commanders and it won't break the bank either.

So, is Brissett a mentor or competitor? Either is good for Washington.
