News: Redskins churn 53-man roster while Guice, Reed, Allen statuses unknown

Derrius Guice is out for an indefinite amount of time, with Adrian Peterson left to pick up the pieces in the Washington Redskins backfield. Guice is joined by Jordan Reed and Jonathon Allen in the trainer's room.

Tuesday means its time to move on to Week 2 and prepare for the Washington Redskins second straight divisional matchup to begin the season. The Dallas Cowboys and their newly revamped offense are coming to town. The Redskins face a bit of the unknown as several key players have been nipped by the injury bug. The cream of the crop of Redskins players facing injury uncertainty is running back Derrius Guice, who reportedly will miss time with his second knee injury in his first two years in the NFL. Guice is joined by both Jordan Reed and Jonathan Allen, whose participation this week is still yet to be determined. 

Washington made a roster move Tuesday, but not because of all of the injuries. Meanwhile, replacing Guice in the backfield will be veteran Adrian Peterson, who's left to pick up the pieces just one week after disgracefully being left of the active roster. If Guice misses significant time, Peterson will have an opportunity to move up the all-time rushing yards list. Currently he sits in 8th place, 344 yards behind Jerome Bettis and 366 behind LeDanian Tomlinson. 

If there was a fantasy football Hall of Fame, Peterson would be in it. The all-time great looks like the No. 1 waiver wire add in fantasy football this week, and is accompanied by speedy rookie wide receiver Terry McLaurin as Redskins to look out for in Sunday afternoon's clash with the Cowboys.

The timeline on Guice's return is anywhere from 1-4 weeks, depending on how his knee reacts to treatment over that time. Guice hurt his leg in his return to action against the Philadelphia Eagles, following the tear of his ACL in the opposite knee during the 2018 pre-season. As a result of the injury, expect a full dose of Adrian Peterson for the foreseeable future. 

"Gruden may now have no choice but to dress Peterson this weekend while repairing the relationship in the process. The Redskins rushed for a total of 28 yards against the Eagles, which caused many to justifiably take aim at Gruden for deciding to bench Peterson in the first place after he produced more than 1,000 yards in 16 starts for the team in 2018. Health-wise, the Redskins are moving backwards, and up next are the red-hot Dallas Cowboys in Week 2."

Before Sunday's game, all signs pointed toward the Eagles rolling the Redskins, but at least early on, the Redskins weren't having it. As the saying goes, that's why they play the game. The biggest statistical standout of the week for Washington was rookie wide receiver, Terry McLaurin, who made the most of his NFL debut. 

"Washington lagged just barely behind Philadelphia on an EPA/pass basis and matched their performance in terms of success rate and 1st down rate through the air. Much of this came on the back of rookie wideout Terry McLaurin. McLaurin had a final line of 5 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown and came about 2 feet shy of catching a 70+ yard TD pass."

Spence was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 2016 second-round pick, with youth an natural talent on his side. Someone thought highly of him at some point and that's reason enough to at least kick the tires. With the Redskins currently heave at defensive line, this may be a just-in-case free look, with an eye toward the future.

Gruden sat down for a retrospective Q&A on Sunday's loss to Eagles, and predictably, came away disappointed after giving up a half time lead to the divisions foe. Gruden also spoke about the difficulty put on the team after losing their lead back. 

Gruden: "It's hard. This guy works his tail off to get back in shape and rehab from his last injury, and then to have something else come up possibly, it's hard for the guy. He's a very strong, talented guy. If it is something, he can overcome it. He's got a lot of years left to play. But hopefully, it's something he can deal with and play with."

Moss wasn't the only one that found the benching distasteful, as it has been reported that several veteran members of the team let their frustration be known on Sunday. Peterson rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2018, and just one week after being shoved aside, he'll now be counted on to carry the Redskins backfield.

Peterson was the first person named in Field Yates' "Just add 'em" list of fantasy football pickups this week. It makes all the sense in the world, as Peterson is now the RB1 for the Redskins team that can and will run the ball. Until Guice returns, Peterson is going to see a lot of the rock.

With news that Derrius Guice is set to miss some time due to a knee injury, Peterson -- a healthy scratch in Week 1 -- is back to being the projected starter in Washington. He's not much of a factor in the passing game, but with the expected 15 or more carries he'll get per game, Peterson should be rostered in all leagues."

It often not the case that such a transaction includes two players of the same position, but in this instance, it's tit-for-tat, and the Redskins prepare to take on the Cowboys newly revamped passing offense on Sunday.
