Cowboys Christmas? NFL Reveals Plans For 2 New Holiday Games

The NFL will now have two games being played on Christmas Day, despite the holiday falling on a Wednesday.

The NFL is feeling festive ahead of the 2024 season, with NFL executive vice president of media distribution Hans Schroeder revealing the league will be playing two games on Christmas Day.

Naturally, the move makes business sense as the festive season usually brings in a huge amount of viewers and Christmas Day is again looming as a big day in the NFL.

But even as it looms as yet another big money-making opportunity for the NFL ... when it comes to the holiday season, there are those who think this move feels like the league is gorging itself. But yes, the fans will eat it up.

"From what we've seen the last couple years is really some unprecedent growth, and not just on Christmas, on Thanksgiving, too," Schroeder said via NFL.com. "The last couple of years have had the highest-regular season game ever viewed in the regular season. That mindset, that opportunity, that belief we have that football brings people together -- that's even truer on these big holidays that happen throughout the year.

"When we saw the viewership from this past year, really our fans spoke. We certainly saw and believe that they are very much enjoying and wanting NFL football on Christmas. So what we're going to do is we're going to play a couple of games, like we've typically played for well over a decade, probably more than that, on Saturday of Week 16, and then come back and play a couple of games on Christmas Day on Wednesday."

It is not known which teams will get the privilege to play on Christmas Day, but we imagine that there will be a long list of teams who will want that exposure, and given how lucrative it could be, there will be teams pushing to play on that day.

And yes, we will assume that Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys, who already essentially own Thanksgiving, would like to be the "America's Team'' gift to the country on Christmas, too.

With the festive season always a big opportunity for ratings boosts as the NBA paved the way, it appears now that the NFL is following suit and will be having two games on the holiday.

How the league will work out the scheduling of these games to mix into the calendar remains to be seen, but as we know with the NFL, when there's money to be made, they always find a way.
