Anthony Brown Still Unsigned; Cowboys Work Out USFL CB at Camp
OXNARD, Calif. - A notable player affiliated with the Dallas Cowboys is cornerback Anthony Brown. But we've explained that he doesn't seem in the team's plans ... despite our news that he's done work inside The Star in this offseason ... and now we have more clarity on what Dallas might do.
On Tuesday as training camp opens here in Oxnard, the Cowboys are giving a tryout to USFL cornerback Josh Butler. He's 26, was undrafted out of Michigan State, and is 6-0, 182 pounds. He also happens to be from Mesquite in the DFW area.
Meanwhile, Brown, a sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, has been around the Cowboys for a while now. He has appeared in 94 games with 69 starts in seven seasons, posting 324 tackles, 59 passes defended and nine interceptions. He had his best season in 2021, but unfortunately tore his Achilles late last year.
Coming off such a devastating injury, Brown is still a free agent months into the offseason. As more time goes on, a return to Dallas seems more and more unlikely. We have addressed that while celebrating Brown for his "ballsy'' willingness to play hurt. But he remains unemployed.
Brown previously signed a three-year deal worth $15 million with the Cowboys in 2020. At this point in free agency, he's unlikely to get another contract worth nearly as much. Dallas of course has Trevon Diggs, Stephon Gilmore and DaRon Bland at corner ... and their search now is about a bottom-of-the-roster churn.
