Cowboys ‘Ballsy’ Anthony Brown: Best Free Agent Left to Sign?

Former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown totaled 42 tackles and seven pass deflections in 2022 before a torn Achilles sidelined him for the season.

The Dallas Cowboys suffered five regular-season losses last season, along with their 19-12 Divisional Round defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. However, one of the biggest blows had nothing to do with their performance on the field.

In their Week 13 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, starting cornerback Anthony Brown went down with a torn Achilles, ending his season right there.

"I'm sick for him,'' Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said at the time.

But also sickening, Brown - the 2016 sixth-round pick who our Mike Fisher has often labeled “ballsy” for his willingness to fight through injuries - was preparing to enter this offseason as a free agent and certainly receive a payday.

With Brown still awaiting a contract from a potential suitor, Bleacher Report rated the 29-year-old as the No. 9 "Best Unsigned Player Under 30."

Writes Bleacher Report writes. "Make no mistake - that injury is the only reason that Brown remains unsigned this late into the offseason."

That is obviously so. And . Despite never being named to a Pro Bowl over his seven-year NFL tenure, Brown has still proven to be a reliable cornerback since entering the league in 2016. A starter over 69 of his 94 career games in Dallas, the Purdue product compiled 42 tackles and seven pass deflections before his season-ending injury.

"Brown allowed just 65 of 122 passes thrown in his direction to be completed in 2021 and posted a passer rating against of 78.4," Bleacher Report writes. "For the record, that passer rating against is lower than Trevon Diggs' was last year. And Darius Slay of the Eagles. Brown's numbers weren't quite as good in 2022, but he was still a solid NFL starter."

With Dallas trading for cornerback Stephon Gilmore earlier in the offseason, Brown's services are seemingly not needed in Dallas. But once “AB” establishes that he’s again healthy? Whichever team does sign him will be receiving a "ballsy" secondary piece.
