FRISCO - We reported on Tuesday here at CowboysSI.com that Jerry Jones' optimism regarding an early return to action for Michael Gallup was well-founded - so much so that we believed the second-year receiver might put in enough work on the Dallas Cowboys' Tuesday off-day to be ready to practice today.

And indeed, here comes Michael Gallup.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on Wednesday morning confirms our report - and confirms the optimism of Jerry, who often uses the self-effacing nickname "Dr. Jones'' on himself and who is also tabbed by me as "Jerry Poppins'' due to his spoonful-of-sugar mentality.

Said Garrett: "We anticipate him practicing today.''

So Gallup could be playing Sunday against the Green Bay Packers? That is the player's plan.

Garrett naturally leans toward conservatism when it comes to public pronouncements about players' health. But I was told that even though Tuesday was a players' day off here at The Star, Gallup -- who has missed two games after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery and was thought to be out for a few weeks -- was working with the coaching staff and the medical team to test his progress.

And obviously, Gallup passed those tests.

The knee surgery was supposed to require as many as four weeks of recovery. But Gallup's work ethic is a factor in his more rapid return to the 3-1 Cowboys, who would like every possible weapon coming off their 12-10 loss at New Orleans last week and facing Aaron Rodgers and the Packers at AT&T Stadium this Sunday.
