FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys, like any other NFL team, must deal with the highs and lows of injuries and surgeries and rehabs and questions about availability ... but this is a concern of a different sort.

Coach Mike McCarthy has just been scheduled for surgery on Wednesday to deal with acute appendicitis. He is expected to be in and out of the hospital today.

What will happen for "Sunday Night Football'' with the 10-2 Philadelphia Eagles coming to town to take care of the 9-3 Cowboys? McCarthy is planning on coaching in that game.

“You think that tough Irishman is gonna miss this game?'' defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said with a laugh. "We certainly expect him to be rocking by game day.”

What will happen today here inside The Star at practice? The Dallas coordinators Quinn, Brian Schottenheimer and John Fassel will step up to oversee practice in McCarthy's absence.

The Wednesday plan and the Thursday plan as it regards media obligations will have Quinn and Schottenheimer taking turns at the podium here at The Star.

McCarthy, in his fourth season in Dallas, showed up for work here at The Star on Wednesday but was clearly not feeling well.

He missed a game due to COVID in December of 2021, with Quinn stepping up as the interim head coach and securing a win at the New Orleans Saints. That seems the likely call here if McCarthy is somehow unavailable, with Schottenheimer, of course, taking over McCarthy's offensive playcalling duties.
