'Game Can't Love You Back!' Cowboys Ex Announces Retirement With Amazing Quote
Bo Scarbrough may be an obscure name to some NFL fans, but some may be more familiar now.
Scarbrough, a seventh-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2018, officially announced his retirement from professional football on Friday, and gave an all-time quote in the process.
“You can love this game all you want. But at the end of the day, the game can’t love you back because it’s not a person; it’s a ball,” Scarbrough said in a United Football League press release. “I have so much respect for the people still playing. And when it’s your time, you’ll know it’s your time.”
Despite a strong college career at Alabama that included two national championships, Scarbrough never found his footing at the NFL level.
The Cowboys released him just before the 2018 season began, and he would bounce around the league from there. After leaving Dallas, Scarbrough spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks (twice), Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders.
In seven regular-season games, six with Detroit and one with Seattle, Scarbrough ran for 408 yards and a touchdown while averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
Following his time in the NFL, Scarbrough returned to his home state of Alabama to join the United State Football League's Birmingham Stallions. He then proceeded to help the Stallions win back-to-back USFL titles, but dealt with injuries along the way.
The Stallions then re-acquired Scarbrough in the seventh round of the UFL dispersal draft following the merger between the USFL and XFL.
“We were blessed to have Bo as a part of our football family, he is a champion on and off the field," UFL Head of Football Operations Daryl Johnston said. “He is an outstanding representative of his community and the state of Alabama. We wish him the very best in his retirement and know he will be successful using his passion for the game in the next chapter of his journey.”
