Cowboys Add Former Russell Wilson Coach To Mike McCarthy Staff

The Dallas Cowboys are hiring a new offensive assistant in Boston College's Steve Shimko, who previously worked with Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks.

Even a month into the offseason, Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys are still making new additions to the coaching staff.

According to ESPN's Todd Archer, the Cowboys are hiring former Boston College Eagles offensive coordinator Steve Shimko as an offensive assistant. On Sunday, Shimko shared a picture of him and his family wearing Cowboys gear, indicating that this hire has been in the works for a few days.

Shimko, 34, has spent the past four seasons with Boston College and worked his way up the coaching ladder. He started as a tight ends coach in 2020, then moved up to quarterbacks coach in 2022 and finally added offensive coordinator to his title in 2023. Notably, the Eagles averaged 198.3 rushing yards per game under Shimko's watch this season, ranking second in the ACC and 16th in the country.

Prior to going to Boston College, Shimko had a notable NFL stint as an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Seattle Seahawks. He worked closely with then-Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who threw 76 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions during Shimko's two-year run with the team.

It was also in Seattle where Shimko crossed paths with Brian Schottenheimer, who was then the Seahawks offensive coordinator and now holds the same position with the Cowboys. For Schottenheimer, bringing in a familiar face is surely welcome.

Going even further back, Shimko had a few other notable stints at the college level. He immediately transitioned from a player to a coach at Rutgers, and had stops at Georgia and Western Michigan as well.
