Sean Payton BREAKING: Cowboys 'Dream' Dies; Broncos Trading with Saints for New Coach

Dallas Cowboys "dream'' Sean Payton is closing in on a new job with the Broncos trading for his rights from the Saints.

Dallas Cowboys fans expecting Sean Payton's return to North Texas can bid a "Rocky Mountain Bye'' to the idea.

Per multiple reports, the Denver Broncos are working out a compensation deal with Payton's most recent employers, the New Orleans Saints, which would clear the way for the former Cowboys quarterbacks coach to take over the top headset in Colorado.

So Payton is getting traded to Denver. ... maybe under the terms of a rumored deal that would pay him a guaranteed $100 million over four years.

But whatever the terms are, that largely erases anybody's dream of Payton being a successor to incumbent Dallas coach Mike McCarthy any time soon.

Since Payton left to become the Saints' head coach in 2006, professional and amateur prognosticators alike have pegged him to take over the same in Dallas at some point in time. Many have credited Payton for discovering Tony Romo's talents during his three-year trial under Bill Parcells (2003-05). He went on to drive the Saints to new heights, amassing a 152-89 record in 15 seasons (2006-11, 2013-21) before retiring after last season to join Fox Sports' studio NFL coverage.

Can Payton turn around the Broncos? That's the job.

Can McCarthy keep the critics at bay? That's part of the gig in Dallas ... with some snipers sure to now note that the highly regarded Dan Quinn sits on the Cowboys staff ... you know, just in case.
