Cowboys Tyron Smith On Injury Report; 'Seize the Day' at Giants? 'SNF' Preview
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys kick off the 2023-24 season against the New York Giants in prime time with a chance to extend an impressive streak. Dallas has won 11 of the last 12 games vs. the NFC East foe Giants, including four straight. ... meaning they have done a lot of "Carpe Omnia'' over the years against this team.
It would also help to be healthy, but unfortunately, on Thursday, Tyron Smith’s name has popped up on the injury/practice report as he was limited by an ankle ailment. (See more injury issues below).
Meanwhile, the wait is over to see coach McCarthy calling plays for the what might be the No. 1 offense in football. Dallas' new "Texas Coast Offense'' (a version of coach McCarthy's West Coast offense philosophy from Green Bay) is designed in part to showcase the Cowboys' overall team speed.
Newest Cowboys receiver Brandin Cooks, the sidekick to ace wideout CeeDee Lamb, has a chance to make NFL history this season. With a 1,000-yard season, he'd become the first player to ever total 1,000 receiving yards in a season with five different teams (New Orleans, New England, LA Rams, Houston.)
Quarterback Dak Prescott is 10-2 against the Giants. Since 2021, the Cowboys are scoring 28.4 offensive points with Prescott under center, the most in the league.
Meanwhile, the Dallas defense looks to get after Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. The Cowboys sacked Jones eight times over two meetings last season. Giants rookie center John Michael Schmitz will be making his NFL debut against a Dallas front led by Micah Parsons.
Another Cowboy to watch is rookie kicker Brandon Aubrey, who will also make his NFL debut on Sunday night.
The 2023 Dallas squad - largely healthy but with injury concerns this week regarding Tyler Smith, Donovan Wilson and Sam Williams - hopes to improve on a 12-5 campaign and usurp the Philadelphia Eagles as NFC East Division champions.
On Thursday, Williams (foot) was moved up to limited, while Tyler Smith (hamstring) and Wilson (calf) did not participate.
FUN FACT: Since Trevon Diggs was drafted in 2020, he is tied for the league lead in interceptions (17) and ranks second in pass breakups (49).
RECORDS: Dallas Cowboys (0-0) at New York Giants (0-0)
ODDS: Dallas is a 3.5-point favorite vs. the Giants.
GAME TIME: Sunday, September 10, 2023 at 7:20 p.m. CT
LOCATION: MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford, New Jersey
TV/RADIO: NBC, 105.3 The Fan
THE FINAL WORD: Giants cornerback Adoree Jackson on Dallas' tandem of QB Dak Prescott and Lamb: Just exceptional talent ... And I think when you have a quarterback and receiver that are on the same page, you can look at numerous duos and they are their favorite target and give them the ball, a lot of things can happen.''
