Eagles OL Fred Johnson Before Signing: ‘Am I Really Worth It?’
New Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Fred Johnson struggled with his worth before he signed with Philadelphia.
“It’s only so much you can take before you start thinking like ‘Damn am I really worth it?’” Johnson said. “I came into here, saw an opportunity and I took it.”
Before signing with the Eagles, Johnson had bounced around between teams. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019 by the Pittsburgh Steelers but was waived before playing a game.
Johnson made his NFL debut with the Cincinnati Bengals and played there for three seasons before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
His new contract with Philadelphia is for two years, through the 2024 season. It’s the first time in his career that he is signed to a multi-year deal.
The Eagles actually released Johnson 24 hours before signing him to his new deal. It was likely just a way for the team to get him out of his old contract and signed to his new one.
The 6-7, 326-pound offensive tackle will be backing up the best offensive line in the NFL in Philadelphia. He’s training under the tutelage of Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, who is regularly regarded as the best offensive line coach in the league
Johnson and Philadelphia will begin their journey back to the Super Bowl on Sept. 10 at 4:25 p.m. at the New England Patriots.
