Eagles & Cardinals Trade Picks in 2023 Draft Due to Jonathan Gannon Tampering Settlement
Both set to pick in the top 10, the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals are in their respective war rooms as the 2023 NFL Draft begins on Thursday.
But as the draft hype has continued to build, the Eagles and Cardinals have been in discussions behind the scenes to agree on a settlement for an issue surrounding Arizona's handling of the hire of new head coach and former Philly defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
The teams released a statement prior to the start of the draft, stating that the Eagles will receive the No. 66 pick (third round) in 2023 from Arizona in exchange for the No. 94 overall pick (third round) in 2023 and a 2024 fifth-round pick.
Per the statement, Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort had a phone call with Gannon "in the days following the NFC Championship game." This call occurred during a period prohibited under the league's anti-tampering policy, a violation on Ossenfort's part.
The Eagles benefit as a result, moving up nearly 30 spots in the third round due to the way the Cardinals handled Gannon's addition to the coaching staff. Arizona gets an additional pick for next year, but experience a significant drop in a high-value round in this draft.
Philly and Arizona are currently set to pick in the top 10, but there's always the possibility another trade happens.
