Falcons 'Noncommital' on QB Desmond Ridder?

The future of the Atlanta Falcons franchise is dependent upon what they decide to do with second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder this offseason.

The Atlanta Falcons are faced with a tough decision this offseason following a season in which none of their quarterbacks threw for more than 2300 yards.

When asked about the fate of the quarterback position heading into next season, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith opted to continue hiding his cards regarding a decision.

“I don’t think it’s smart business strategy ever to give away what your plan is. Everybody is trying to look at their free-agency boards, and there are a lot of decisions to be made. I think you’re in a bad organization if every day-to-day thing (you think) is out there,” Smith said to The Athletic

In a league where team success is predicated on the quarterback, expect Atlanta to thoroughly evaluate what they have at the position currently in Ridder while also looking at who could be on the market.

Last offseason, the Falcons signed free agent quarterback Marcus Mariota with hopes that he could lead the team back to the playoffs as he had during his time with the Tennessee Titans. Mariota would ultimately come up short during his time as the Falcons’ starter, eventually losing the starting job to rookie third-round draft pick Ridder.

Ridder won the Falcons’ last two regular season games, posting an average Quarterback Rating of 99.2 during that span while going 2-2 overall as a starter.

How Atlanta values Ridder will soon become common knowledge as they must decide whether to pursue a veteran QB like Derek Carr or potentially draft a quarterback in the first round of this NFL Draft as they look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
