An Initial Look at IOL Jon Runyan's Film

Damian Parson has some quick takeaways about newly signed interior offensive lineman Jon Runyan's film.

The New York Giants signed former Green Bay Packers guard Jon Runyan Jr to a three-year deal worth $30 million with $17 million guaranteed at signing, a made to improve an offensive line that needed an upgrade.

Runyan was successful in both phases of the offense (run blocking and pass protection) for the Packers. In pass pro, he only allowed two sacks all last season. He is spatially aware and will use his strikes/punches to work a defensive lineman into his teammate or bumper closest to him.

His strikes are thrown with good timing, rarely early to be countered. They land with good pop to disrupt the timing of the defender's rush. Runyan's lateral movement skills are above average, and when paired with his punches, he can stay in phase or lockstep with opposing rushers.

Runyan works well in the run game and is experienced in gap/power and zone schemes. He has a good get-off at the snap to quickly get out in front of the ball carrier on the perimeter. He excels on zone runs with his ability to reach and cut off front-side defensive linemen. Runyan will cut off back-side defenders when the run is directed away from him.

Runyan can struggle with reaching second-level defenders as a puller and lead blocker. Either he cannot connect and drive his defender, or his pad leverage is too high, leading to poorly targeted attempts. This can limit the effectiveness of the rushing attack in those instances.

Runyan has moments when he takes poor angles based on the pre-snap alignment of the defensive linemen occupying his responsible lane. This leads to defeat by quicker, slanting defensive linemen.

Overall, Runyan brings good things to the table and takes care of business up front. There will be miscues and issues to watch out for, and I'm not so sure Pro-Bowl or All-Pro is in his future, but Runyon is a "steady Eddie" because he is solid and gets the job done.
