Giants Likely to Turn to Free Agency to Boost Offensive Line

The New York Giants need to hit the ground running with their offensive line, which is why free agency seems to be its bet bet to fixing a decades long problem.

The New York Giants offensive line has struggled for arguably a decade plus with little to no relief in sight, mostly due to performance but partly due to injuries that exposed a significant lack of depth.

With the unit high on general manager Joe Schoen's "to-do" list this off-season, there is a growing belief that Schoen will use free agency to jump-start the line's improvement regardless of who takes snaps under center.

Among the names to watch for include Patriots guard/tackle Mike Onwenu, Raiders guard/tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, and Lions interior offensive lineman Jonah Jackson, whom Pro Football Network believes would be a great fit along the Giants' interior where currently both guard spots are up for grabs.

"Detroit, already spending heavily on OL, may be unable to afford Jonah Jackson," Robinson pointed out. "But the Giants could use a veteran guard like Jackson, who should be comfortable in any scheme after playing in Ben Johnson’s creative Lions offense."

Last season, three of the top five Giants offensive linemen to allow the most pressures played the guard position, including Ben Bredeson, Justin Pugh and Mark Glowinski.

Jackson, who, per PFF, only allowed 27 pressures last season (less than each of Bredeson, Pugh, and Glowinski), would help improve a porous Giants offensive line. During his time in the league, Jackson has shown the ability to stay healthy, missing just nine games over four seasons.
