PFF Gives Giants Very Favorable Grade for Free Agency Haul

The New York Giants have been proactive in fixing an underperforming roster from last season and the changes are notable.

Free agency started with a bang for the New York Giants, with key arrivals and departures announced. Based on the moves made by the team, Pro Football Focus' Brad Spielberger likes what Giants general manager Joe Schoen has done, starting with the acquisition via trade for edge rusher Brian Burns.

The most favorable way to look at this deal is that the Giants effectively used the draft capital they acquired for interior defender Leonard Williams to land a younger player looking for a second contract instead of a third contract. Burns addresses arguably the biggest need on this Giants roster and should have a lot less attention on him all the time now, playing alongside Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Spielberger noted that new guard Jon Runyan was a respectable signing but also pointed out that Runyan shared a significant amount of playing time with another guard during his last season with the Green Bay Packers.

Runyan is a solid, durable player, and the Giants desperately needed to improve on the interior of their offensive line. However, while Runyan started every game in 2023, the Packers began rotating in second-year guard Sean Rhyan, and eventually, the snap counts were about 50-50 between the two.

The Giants also signed running back Devin Singletary, who played for the Houston Texans last season and the Buffalo Bills before that. Although not as well known as Saquon Barkley, Singletary has proven he can lead a team's rushing attack.

The Saquon Barkley era has ended in New York, and the Giants' brass turns to a familiar face in [Devin] Singletary, whom general manager Joe Schoen helped scout with the Buffalo Bills and Brian Daboll coached as the offensive coordinator. Singletary was solid in Houston in a fairly sizable role, beating out Dameon Pierce for the starting job.

It must also be noted that the Giants signed tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders. When healthy, Eluemunor can play left and right tackle and is almost guaranteed to be an upgrade over Evan Neal at right tackle. The signing of Eluemunor could end up being one of the best off-season signings for the Giants.

Overall, Spielberger gave the Giants an A- for their free-agency moves. Of course, it must be remembered that championships are not won in March and certainly not on paper, but at this point, it looks like Schoen went after the Giants' most glaring needs at the end of the 2023 season.
