Packers Take 10-7 Halftime Lead Over Giants

The New York Giants are trying to make it three wins in a row.

East Rutherford, N.J. - The New York Giants trail the Green Bay Packers 10-7 in their Monday night game at MetLife Stadium.

The visiting Packers won the coin toss and elected to receive the football first to open the primetime affair, but to no avail. Green Bay got the ball moving on the ground early, but the Giants defense held on a mistimed pass on third down to force a punt around midfield and hand the ball to Tommy DeVito and company for their first licks of the night.

New York would face a similar fate on their opening possession of the evening, moving the ball 26 yards in six plays behind the legs of running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Tommy DeVito. Unfortunately, the gunslinger overthrew Wan’Dale Robinson on an open third-down look, and the Giants went off the field equally as empty as their foe.

On their ensuing drive, after forcing a second three and out on defense, the Giants were given prime field position to try to get some points on the board. The Giants earned the ball at the Packers’ 38-yard line after Robert Rochelle was called for fair catch interference, but the possession went fruitless with two yards in four plays and a missed 46-yard field goal attempt by Randy Bullock.

After exchanging the pigskin on the first four possessions, the Packers finally cashed in on the Giants' mishap. In a seven-play, 62-yard drive, Green Bay gunslinger Jordan Love found three different receivers, connecting last with Jayden Reed for 16 yards and a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

With another early deficit staring them in the face, it didn’t take long for the Giants to respond with one of their best offensive performances of the season to tie the contest at 7-7. Behind creative play calling and excellent rushing execution by DeVito, New York moved the ball 75 yards in eight plays and evened the game with a Saquon Barkley 5-yard rush to open the second quarter.

Green Bay ran into some turnover woes midway into the second quarter, with Jordan Love fumbling the pigskin on 3rd-and-2 at the Giants’ 27-yard line and recovered by Xavier McKinney the ensuing possession. Then, their next opportunity was marred by an interception deep in New York territory by Jason Pinnock, which again went unrewarded with a Giants 3-and out.

Love and company had a chance to knock on the door of the endzone at the end of the second quarter after the Giants turned the ball over on downs on a questionable gamble near midfield. The Giants' defense batted a pass on 3rd-and-4 to shut down that attempt, and Green Bay nailed a 36-yard field goal with Andres Carlson to steal a 10-7 lead at halftime.

BLUE NOTES

DeVito is 7 of 10 for 48 yards and has 27 yards on the ground through 4 carries. Love is 13 of 20 for 116 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a fumble.

Receiver Wan'Dale Robinson leads Giants rushers with two attempts for 36 yards while running back A.J. Dillon has nine rushes for 26 yards for the Packers.

Receiver Isaiah Hodgins has one catch for 14 yards to lead the receiving effort for New York. Dillon also leads Green Bay’s catching unit with one grab for 35 yards.
