Giants, Lions Planning Joint Training Camp Practices

The Giants and Lions appear to be looking to make joint training camp practices an annual tradition.

The New York Giants and Detroit Lions, who last year held two days of joint training camp practices at Allen Park, Michigan, are looking into holding joint practices again this summer, this time at the Giants' team headquarters in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell, a third-round pick by the Giants in the 1999 draft, told the media of the pending plans during the NFC Coaches Breakfast media session Tuesday morning at the league meeting in Orlando, Florida.

"Tentatively, right now, I’ve been talking to (Giants coach Brian) Daboll," Campbell said, according to The Detroit News. "So I think there’s a chance we could go to New York."

Last summer, the Giants and Liosn got a good taste of where each club stood when they engaged in friendly sparring on the Lions' home turf. The results eventually forecasted what was to come as the Giants had mixed results during those two practices ahead of their preseason game, whereas the Lions, last year's NFC North winners, looked like the better team.

Campbell said that the team has filed a request with the league for joint practices with the hopes that they'll also be able to open their preseason against the Giants in Week 1.

NFL teams are allowed to request one preseason opponent, and the Lions have filed the necessary paperwork requesting the Giants for the preseason opener.

"I don’t know if it’s going to get done or not, but we’ve been talking about it just because we wanted to reciprocate the fact they came to us; we wanted to give (the opportunity to host) to them."

Giants head coach Brian Daboll didn't comment on the possibility of joint practices with the Lions this summer, but it was well known that last year, in addition to working against the Lions, the Giants had hoped to have joint practices with the New York Jets.

That never materialized, probably because the Giants and Jets were set to play each other in the regular season. Daboll said at the time that he and Jets head coach Robert Saleh might revisit the possibility. Still, it's unknown if they have had any paramilitary discussions about joint practices before their annual preseason opener.

In other notables from the legue meetings, the HBO series Hard Knocks will now put a focus on an entire division rather than a single team.

That means teams like the Giants, which have avoided being picked to be on the series, could be forced to do the series if the NFC East division gets announced as the program's choice next month.

The NFL also announced that its media partners will exclusively stream two games next season. The Week 1 game, featuring the Philadelphia Eagles and a still-to-be-determined opponent square off in the league's first-ever regular season game played in São Paulo, Brazil, will be streamed on Peacock. Amazon Prime Video will exclusively stream a Wild Card game as part of the opening round of the playoffs.

The league is also planning to hold two games on Christmas Day this year, despite the holiday falling on a Wednesday.
