Giants Activate Sam Beal from IR

Beal will make his NFL debut this weekend against the Jets.

The Giants activated cornerback Sam Beal off injured reserve Tuesday, one day ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.

Beal, last year’s third-round pick in the NFL supplemental draft, will make his NFL debut Sunday against the Jets, the team announced. 

Beal missed all of last season after undergoing shoulder surgery and was sidelined this year with a hamstring injury.

Before his injury, Beal was competing with rookie DeAndre Baker for the starting cornerback job. 

Baker has struggled so far in his rookie season to where when head coach Pat Shurmur was asked during a Tuesday conference call with the media if he planned to stick with Baker, he said, “At this point, yeah. Then we’re going to bring (Sam) Beal.” 

To create room for Beal, the Giants waived second-year safety Sean Chandler. 

Chandler, who signed with the Giants last year as an undrafted free agent out of Temple, has played in all 25 games after making the roster last season. 

This year, he’s seen his defensive snaps reduced-- he’s played 26 snaps through nine games and none int he last two games.  

The Giants also terminated punter Sean Smith from the practice squad. Smith, a left-footed punter, had been signed last week to help the Giants special teams prepare for Cowboys punter Sam Martin, who is left-footed.
