Giants add Nate Stupar to boost ailing linebacker group

The Giants turned to a familiar face to provide depth at inside linebacker with Alec Ogletree and Tae Davis ailing.

With inside linebackers Alec Ogletree (hamstring) and Tae Davis (concussion) ailing and longshots to play in Sunday's home game against Washington, the Giants re-signed linebacker Nate Stupar for added depth at the position.

Stupar was released in early September in some late shuffling of the 53-man roster. Initially a seventh-round pick of the Raiders in the 2012 NFL Draft, he jumped around with six different teams before joining the Giants in 2018 off waivers where he played mostly on special teams last year.

In 79 career games, Stupar has recorded 133 tackles, two sacks, four passes defended and one interception.

To make room for Stupar, the Giants waived tight end Eric Tomlinson. There are now four tight ends remaining on the Giants roster: Evan Engram, Rhett Ellison, Garrett Dickerson, and Kaden Smith.

In three starts, Ogletree, one of the defensive captains, had 13 tackles, including nine solos. In the first two games, he was on the field for every defensive snap.

Now in his second season with the Giants after coming over in a trade l last year with the Rams, Ogletree has recorded 106 tackles, including 67 solos for Big Blue.

Davis, who was signed as an undrafted free agent last year, has six tackles in the three games this season, with three solo.

In addition to Stupar, the other healthy inside linebackers are rookie Ryan Connelly and veteran David Mayo.
