Giants Reportedly Checked Out Another Michigan Player During School’s Pro Day

All of the hype was around quarterback J.J. McCarthy, but the Giants also monitored this Michigan pass rusher.

The Michigan Wolverines are coming off a 2023 National Championship win. They also happen to have one of the top draft prospects this year, quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Among many other teams, the Giants had boots on the ground for Michigan’s Pro Day last week to scout even more potential fits for their roster. With the draft one month away, time is ticking, and the Giants need to fill more needs.

While all eyes were on McCarthy, who is expected to be a top-ten selection next month, the Giants reportedly met with edge rusher Braiden McGregor. McGregor is 6-foot-6, 267 pounds, and an absolute freak of an athlete. He plays the game intensely and has a great motor despite not playing very much at Michigan.

McGregor had 26 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks in 13 games last year. He noticeably had two sacks in the Rose Bowl against Alabama, which certainly raised his draft stock. McGregor’s size alone put him on the map, and he could be a nice fit for the Giants if he were selected.

With the acquisition of Brian Burns, the Giants' edge room got a huge boost at the start of free agency. Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Azeez Ojulari are the three pass rushers the Giants will rely on. Still, Ojulari is a big question mark, given his injury history and dip in production last season.

Now that he’s going to be in a rotational role, many think that will be beneficial for his career. Potentially add McGregor into the mix, and the Giants have a behemoth rotational pass rusher alongside Ojulari.

McGregor projects as a Day 3 selection as of now. The Giants, who only have six total selections in the draft, have only three picks on day three. General manager Joe Schoen has shown his ability to move up and down the draft order, so that number is fluid now. Regardless, McGregor would be an intriguing addition to a defense looking to boost its pass rush heading into 2024.
