Top NFL OL Draft Prospect Admires Giants' Andrew Thomas's Game

For as long as the NFL has existed, there have been numerous cases in which a star of today sets the tone and example for the stars of tomorrow.

Such is the case with Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu, a projected first-round pick who could be the first offensive tackle off the board. Fashanu, in an interview with Penn State Magazine, was asked what football role models/favorite players he's admired over the years.

Among his favorites? New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas.

"I watch a lot of Andrew Thomas film," Fashanu said. "(Eagles) Lane Johnson—I think every offensive tackle probably watches a good amount of Trent Williams (49ers). I watch a lot of (Lions) Penei Sewell… just a good mix.

"But if I had to choose a favorite, it would be Andrew Thomas."

During a video call with reporters on Monday, Fashanu's admiration was shared with Thomas as the Giants opened their off-season program.

"That's pretty cool to hear, honestly," Thomas said. "The time has flown by since my rookie year. If guys want to model their game after me, that means I'm doing the right thing. And I'm continuing to get better. I want to be a role model for the guys coming behind me, so I am just continuing to work every day."

Thomas, voted a team captain two years in a row, was the Giants' first-round pick in 2020, the fourth overall selection in that year's draft, and the highest-drafted offensive lineman by the Giants since Ohio State's John Hicks was selected third overall in 1974.

Last year, just before the start of training camp, Thomas signed a five–year, $117.5 million contract extension that included a $67 million guarantee at signing, setting a new NFL record for an offensive lineman.

Thomas has appeared in 55 games with 54 starts. He also has one career touchdown reception.
