Nick Foles to be placed on IR, but Doug Marrone expects him back in 2019
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles underwent surgery on his fractured left clavicle on Monday and will now be placed on the injured reserve list. Foles was injured on his 11th snap of Sunday's 40-26 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the same play he threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Chark.
Marrone said that while Foles will be placed on IR, he hopes and expects his starting quarterback will return at some point this season.
"Nick had his surgery this morning. That went well. We will put him on IR. We look forward to him coming back, obviously when that opportunity presents itself," Marrone said. "I do expect him to come back."
Marrone said even after Foles suffered the injury Sunday, he was requesting to be brought back to the sidelines so he could help rookie backup quarterback Gardner Minshew. And while Foles recovers and tries to find the field again, Marrone expects more of the same out of the offensive captain.
"I know that he wants to be heavily involved with the quarterback room and helping Gardner (Minshew)," Marrone said." I mean shoot, he said that during the game yesterday, that he wanted to come back out and be able to help."
Minshew was impressive after stepping in for Foles, finishing the game 22-of-25 passing for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Marrone said after Sunday's game that he is more comfortable with Minshew as the team's starter than he was a few weeks ago.
"I think that Gardner [Minshew II], I feel better about him now, today, after week 1 than I did probably during the preseason. I think that’s fair to say," Marrone said Sunday. "I think the work during the preseason was able to get him ready for things like this."
Joshua Dobbs, who the team acquired in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth-round pick, will take Foles' spot on the 53-man roster and serve as Minshew's backup.
