Jets Free-Agent Target: Ex Raiders Offensive Lineman?

The New York Jets may be wise to monitor the market for free agent tackle Jermaine Eluemunor to help bolster their depth along the offensive line.

While the New York Jets are likely use this week’s free agent frenzy to explore all options in their attempts to improve their offense, the team’s greatest area of need is along the offensive line — particularly at offensive tackle.

Arguably their greatest position of need, the Jets — at the very least — will be looking for a top-level talent to replace starting left tackle Mekhi Becton, who is not expected to return. Multiple reports suggest New York may be willing to invest their first-round (No. 10) overall to obtain their future franchise left-side cornerstone.

Still, the Jets will also have need for depth at the position. As a result, they may find free agent swing tackle Jermaine Eluemuor to be a solid fit, while also being palatable to their wallet.

Jermaine Eluemunor

Though Eluemunor may be a tier below top free agent options such as Dallas Cowboys legend Tyron Smith and Cincinnati Bengals tackle Jonah Williams, his experience may earn him an additional look or two this spring. For the past two years, the longtime swing tackle has been a reliable option for the Las Vegas Raiders, posting pressure-rates-allowed below five percent in both 2022 and 2023. His ability to handle speed-to-power defenders makes his best fit at right tackle. However, he is versatile enough to play along the left.

Despite the team’s struggles at quarterback, a large portion of the blame pie for the Jets' anemic output in 2023 can be attributed to the porous nature of their offensive line. Ranking in the lower third of the NFL in nearly every measurable metric — including No. 30 overall by Pro Football Network — it should come as no surprise that New York may be eager to invest prime draft capital to repair a severely fractured unit.

In addition to his skills on the field, Eluemunor’s willingness to play wherever he is most needed will make him a valuable commodity. He is also battle-tested in the AFC East, having played for the New England Patriots (2019-20) and the Miami Dolphins in 2021.

The Jets will officially enter the free agency fray at the start of the NFL year on March 13 at 4 p.m. ET. They may, however, begin negotiating with prospective players beginning on Monday at noon, the start of the league’s legal tampering period.
