New GM Joe Douglas is already busy trying to round out his front office staff and a familiar name to Jets fans is on his short list.

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay confirmed to Rich Cimini that he's in the mix for a role in the Jets' front office.

“Joe is considering multiple options, and I’m one of the options,” McShay said to Cimini.

It's uncertain what role McShay would fill but the Jets are currently without a vice president of player personnel after the firing of Brian Heimerdinger. If McShay was inserted into that slot, he would serve as Douglas' right-hand man.

There's always the possibility of a rearrangement to bring in McShay in a lesser role. Regardless, it appears Douglas is highly intrigued to see if there's a fit with McShay on the Jets.

Douglas and McShay are scheduled to meet during the middle of next week according to Cimini.

While McShay is an outside the box option, here's three reasons why Douglas would be wise to hire him:

1. McShay has ties to Douglas

McShay and Douglas played together in college at Richmond in the mid-1990s. McShay  walked on as a quarterback while Douglas started four seasons as a left tackle. McShay realized he was better off the field than on it and transitioned into being an undergraduate assistant at Richmond. McShay broke down film and assisted with recruiting. McShay moved on to Scouts Inc. before joining ESPN, where's he's worked since 2006.

2. McShay is a draft guru

McShay is one of the best in the media at evaluating draft prospects. McShay is front and center throughout the year to provide keen insight and analysis for ESPN's NFL draft coverage. Entering the 2018 NFL Draft, McShay raved that Sam Darnold was the most complete quarterback on his big board. If the Jets are going to become perennial contenders, they'll need to draft well and McShay has the scouting chops to deliver.

3. McShay will bring a fresh perspective

McShay has no previous front office experience. Some might use this against McShay but he has the intelligence and work ethic to thrive in a new environment. Since this would be McShay's first go around with an NFL team, he won't be jaded and could provide an innovative mindset to the Jets.

The Jets are also reportedly looking at ex-Browns GM Phil Savage and Ravens executive Chad Alexander for the No. 2 role in the front office, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

However, in a league filled with front office retreads, McShay would be a bold move that could result in huge dividends.
