Lions Parting Ways with Jerry Jacobs

Jacobs' tenure with Lions coming to an end

The Detroit Lions are parting ways with cornerback Jerry Jacobs.

According to ESPN, general manager Brad Holmes and the Lions organization have elected to not extend Jacobs -- who was set to be a restricted free agent -- an offer sheet ahead of the 2024 offseason.

As a result, Jacobs will enter free agency. He played in 40 games, starting 29 over three seasons with the organization.

The Arkansas State product intially made the Lions’ roster as an undrafted free agent in 2021, and wound up starting nine games that season. He suffered a torn ACL late in his rookie campaign, which forced him to miss the first five games of the 2022 campaign.

Jacobs still managed to start eight games in his second NFL season, and collected his first career interception against the New York Jets late in the year.

The talented defensive back hinted on social media that his tenure in Motown could be coming to a close.

With an injury to Emmanuel Moseley leaving an opening at his position in 2023, Jacobs earned the starting position early in the year. He was up-and-down, struggling in Week 2 against Seattle but bouncing back with two interceptions against the Green Bay Packers in Week 4.

Jacobs’ performance began to tail off later in the year, as he had difficulties staying in front of wideouts in coverage. He was eventually benched in Week 16, replaced by Khalil Dorsey and later Kindle Vildor.

In three years with the Lions, Jacobs totaled four interceptions, 131 tackles and one sack.

Detroit faces several other decisions in the secondary. Cornerbacks Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey, along with safety Ceedy Duce, are set to be free agents this offseason.
