All Lions: Ranking Free Agency Needs

What position do Lions need an upgrade at most?

The Detroit Lions are set up nicely with free agency looming.

General manager Brad Holmes has one of the league's biggest allotments of available cap space with free agency set to begin on March 13.

The Lions are viewed as one of the biggest threats to Kansas City's quest for a three-peat. With the organization falling one game short of the Super Bowl this past season, the time to improve is now.

As a result, the organization could choose to bolster its roster with veteran talent through free agency and the trade market. On Friday, the Detroit Free Press ranked the positions of need for the Lions, with free agency just days away.

Not surprisingly, the cornerback position ranked at the top of the list. Detroit is expected to be in the market for an external addition at the position.

The defensive line position ranked second and offensive line was third. In addition to ranking the positions, beat writer Dave Birkett also provided players of interest at each spot for Detroit.

With teams electing to re-sign some of their own players in free agency, the market has begun to take shape. The Bears agreed to a four-year, $76 million deal with top cornerback Jaylon Johnson, setting the price for what acquiring a top cornerback could cost.

Detroit will be forced to wisely navigate what will be a very important offseason.

Here are other storylines surrounding the Detroit Lions on March 8.

  • Lions linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin was elected president of the NFL Players Association.
  • Eight Lions were listed among Pro Football Focus' top 101 players, with Penei Sewell leading the way ranked No. 10.
  • USA Today predicted the futures of its top 21 free agents, with the Lions signing two players and losing one.
  • The NFL awarded compensatory draft picks for the 2024 draft, and the Lions were not among the teams to receive one.
