New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers Prediction: NFL Preseason Week 2

In our Week 1 Texans vs. Patriots prediction, we noted our trend of taking game total unders in Patriot games. We correctly predicted that outcome as only 29 points were scored in their loss to Houston. We are going to continue focusing on the game total with our Patriots vs. Packers prediction.

Patriots’ QB1 Mac Jones didn’t see any action in preseason Week 1, but we could see him for a drive or two in Green Bay. Still, it will mostly be the Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham show – both of whom found some success in Week 1. Zappe completed 12 of 14 passing attempts for 79 yards, while Cunningham rushed for 34 yards and the Pats’ lone touchdown. The rest of the running game is where the Patriots really struggled, and we don’t expect to see Rhamondre Stevenson or newly signed Ezekiel Elliott anytime soon to help.

The Patriot defense, even with second and third units, continues to be Belichick’s calling card, and that was certainly the case with their rushing defense in Week 1 when they allowed just three yards per carry. The passing defense, however, showed some signs of vulnerability, just as it did with the first unit throughout the 2022 regular season. Jalen Mills intercepted C.J. Stroud, but backup quarterbacks Davis Mills and Case Keenum combined for 18/26, two touchdowns and 178 yards.

Still, with the Patriots’ clock-draining offensive mentality, tight defense and Belichick making adjustments, we are again focusing on the game total landing under for our Patriots vs. Packers prediction. This comes despite the Packers’ 36-point outburst in Week 1 against Cincinnati.

Patriots vs. Packers Best Bets & NFL Picks for Saturday Featuring Under 37 Points

The Patriots have the misfortune of playing another team whose 2023 preseason is taken quite seriously in the Packers. With so many young players taking over the reins and so many position battles ensuing, many eventual Packer first-teamers are getting reps in the preseason. QB Jordan Love even connected with one of his top wide receivers in Romeo Doubs for the Packers’ first preseason touchdown last week. The Packers’ 36-point barrage could seem like it causes concern for our under pick in this game, but we are about to detail why we are not worried so much about the Packers’ offense this week.

We won't be surprised to see Jordan Love and his group of young receivers out there to start this game, but we know star running backs Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon won’t be getting much work, if any at all. The Packers benefitted from two rushing touchdowns at the end of Week 1 from Emmanuel Wilson. One of these was an 80-yard scamper to the house, bolstering Wilson’s stat line to six carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns. We don’t count on Wilson mimicking this absurdly efficient performance against the Patriots’ stout run defense.

In the Passing game, rookie Sean Clifford will once again receive a bulk of the snaps. And while he was efficient against the Bengals, he still did cough up two interceptions. Now he goes up against the master in takeaways. Young quarterbacks have a storied history of struggling against Belichick’s defenses, and we see that continuing Saturday.

The Packer defense is expected to be solid this year, and in Week 1 of the preseason, the only touchdown surrendered was a pick-6 by the offense. Against the Patriots’ second- and third-team offense, we like the Packers to seize another game and keep this point total under 37 (-110 at DraftKings Sportsbook).

Patriots & Packers Game Results from NFL Preseason Week 1

The Pats lost their preseason opener at home to the Houston Texans 20-9. Considering how much the Texans have to prove this year with a new quarterback and coaching staff, the outcome is more easily digestible.

Meanwhile, the Packers went out on the road and crushed the Super Bowl-hopeful Cincinnati Bengals 36-19 behind Wilson’s efforts through the ground, Clifford’s efforts through the air and a stout bend-don’t-break performance from the defense.
