Patriots Awarded 2023 Compensatory Draft Picks

The New England Patriots are currently in line to make 10 selections in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

FOXBORO — The New England Patriots have been awarded two compensatory draft choices in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft

As the NFL announced on Thursday evening, the Patriots are among 16 clubs which were provided a total of 37 picks, under their rules for losing compensatory free agents.

As a result, the Pats will receive a fourth-rounder (No. 135 overall) as a result of losing cornerback J.C. Jackson to the Los Angeles Chargers and a sixth-rounder (No. 210) for the loss of Ted Karras to the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2022 offseason.

Several analysts had predicted that the Pats may have been in line to receive a seventh round selection, as a result of running back Brandon Bolden’s signing with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, such a pick was not given.

As presently constituted, the Patriots have the following 10 selections in 2023:

Round 1,  No. 14 Overall

Round 2,  No. 46 Overall

Round 3,  No. 76 Overall (From Carolina)

Round 4,  No. 107 Overall (from LAR)

Round 4,  No. 117 Overall

Round 4,  No. 135  Overall (compensatory)

Round 6,  No. 184 Overall (From Carolina )

Round 6,  No. 187 (OverallFrom Las Vegas)

Round 6,  No.  192 Overall

Round 6,  No. 210 Overall (compensatory)

Compensatory picks are awarded from the third and seventh rounds of the NFL Draft. There are generally greater than 30 compensatory picks awarded yearly. However, they are not equally distributed amongst the teams. A league formula that factors in snap counts, postseason awards, and yearly salary ultimately determines where the selections go, particularly among teams who lost more free agents than gained in the prior offseason. The 2020 Resolution JC-2A also rewards teams that develop minority candidates for head coaching or front office positions and are not counted amongst the standard 32.

The 2023 NFL Draft will be held in Kansas City from April 27-29.
