Patriots Stay at 46, Select Georgia Tech DE Keion White in Second Round

The New England Patriots are once again off to an auspicious start on day two of the 2023 NFL Draft.

FOXBORO —Despite being heavily rumored to move up within the second-round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots stood pat with their pick at No. 46 to select Georgia Tech edge rusher Keion White.

With a clear need at the edge, the Patriots fill it nicely with White, who projects as a 5-technique defenisve end. At 6-4, 287 pounds, the ex-Yellow Jacket exhibits both physical size and athleticism. Though he should see most of his time at the five, he has the versatility move all over the defensive front. White is still considered a developmental talent as a pass-rush prospect. However, he can also be an immediate contributor against the run, provided he is placed on the edges.

The Patriots bolstered their depth chart at cornerback on Thursday by selecting Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez with the No. 17 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Originally slated to pick at 14 overall, the Pats traded their No. 14 pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for their first round selection at number 17, as well as a fourth-rounder, No. 120 overall.

The Patriots entered this year’s draft with 11 selections -- headlined by their first-rounder at 14 followed by picks at 46, 76 and 107. Given coach Bill Belichick’s history, a draft day trade is always a distinct possibility. During his 22 years at the helm in New England, the 71-year old has made a league-high 87 draft-day trades.

With needs still outstanding at offensive tackle, wide receiver and safety, New England is set to pick next at 76 overall.
