The New England Patriots found great value with their two cornerback selections in last year's NFL Draft.

Third-round pick Marcus Jones was a first-team All-Pro as a returner after leading the NFL in punt return yards. He also earned a role as a slot cornerback in the Pats' Top 10 defense. Fourth-rounder Jack Jones also surpassed his draft value, earning a 74.7 grade by Pro Football Focus to make him the 17th-best cornerback in the NFL.

While both Joneses exceeded their exceptions, the Patriots aren't yet assured either can develop into a true lockdown cornerback. Their lack of size - Marcus 5-foot-8 and Jack 5-11 - remains concerning . And in a division that features Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins, Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills and Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets, a shutdown corner is essential for the Patriots to win the AFC East.

Therefore, with their 14th overall pick in next week's draft they must consider one of the top press defensive backs: Penn State's Joey Porter Jr.

He is the son of former NFL star Joey Porter, who played 13 seasons and won Super Bowl XL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also played in four Pro Bowls and was twice named All-Pro.

At Penn State, the 6-2 Porter Jr. was consistently one of the top cornerbacks in the nation. Last season he allowed an astonishing 143 yards in receptions.

Scouts believe his ability to get contact with wideouts will allow him to excel on the NFL level. He also can close catch windows against larger receivers which will bode well against the top AFC receivers.

The Patriots need a lockdown cornerback for coach Bill Belichick, and that trend could continue if they bring in Porter. Jr.
