Patriots Drafting Punter Following Jake Bailey's Release?

The New England Patriots could opt to draft a punter after releasing Jake Bailey.

The New England Patriots have an opening at punter after releasing Jake Bailey on Friday. They may opt to sign one when free agency officially begins on Wednesday. But they could be setting themselves up to draft one come April.

That possibility was put forth in an article by NESN, pointing to a punter prospect out of Rutgers, Adam Korsak, as an "obvious fit" in New England.

"In addition to playing for one of Bill Belichick's favorite programs, Korsak won the Ray Guy Award this past season as the best punter in college football and put up what qualify as video-game numbers for a player at his position," NESN said.

Korsak comes with even more accolades; as pointed out by NESN, he was a three-year team captain for Rutgers and even played in the Senior Bowl. But what may be the most impressive is the statistics that were listed on his Rutgers player profile.

  • Led the nation in punts that pinned the opponent inside its own 20-yard line (32)
  • Net punting average (43.57 yards) ranked third in the nation
  • Had two touchbacks on 75 punts
  •  Had 150 consecutive punts without a touchback
  • 14 punts traveled over 50 yards
  • All-time NCAA record holder in career punts and punting yards

Korsak hosts a decorated resume that NESN projected the Patriots to take in the sixth round.
