Patriots Matt Groh Downplays Focus on One Position in NFL Draft

The New England Patriots will be in the market for wide receivers in next week's NFL Draft.

What will the New England Patriots do with the No. 14 overall pick in the NFL Draft?

All options are still on the table for the Patriots. Whether it is taking a wide receiver, offensive tackle, or even adding an edge rusher, which has come up in the last few weeks as a possibility.

Although wide receiver was a high-profile need for New England heading into the offseason, Patriots' director of player personnel Matt Groh didn't seem to suggest that they had any urgency to pick a player at that position in the first round.

"There's a lot of good receivers in this draft and a lot of good receivers in this league who weren't just first-round picks," Groh said during his press conference on Tuesday.

As for one of the prospects he could select, Groh mentioned Boston College's Zay Flowers.

“I just say he’s a really good receiver,” Groh said.

Flowers has risen up most team's boards through the pre-draft process after having a standout senior season. He was Boston College's most reliable playmaker, catching 78 passes for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Yet, as Groh acknowledges, they can find suitable playmakers in the later rounds of the draft. Last year New England landed Tyquan Thornton in the second round. He caught only 22 passes in his rookie season, but expects to grow into a bigger role next year.

The Patriots on Day 3 have also found receivers , such as Malcolm Mitchell in the fourth round, Matthew Slater in the fifth round and Julian Edelman in the seventh round.
