Former WR Talks with Crosby on Relationship with Brady

Former NFL wide receiver Julian Edelman talks about the first time he met Tom Brady with Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby.

Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby has been busy with his offseason.

When he’s not finding ways to improve his game on and off the field, he spends time with his former Eastern Michigan teammates working on his podcast, The Rush with Maxx Crosby.

Crosby has had multiple guests on his show this offseason and throughout the 2023 season, including Coach Antonio Pierce, several members of the Raiders’ defensive line, and defensive line Coach Rob Leonard.

Crosby had another guest on his podcast this week: former NFL wide receiver Julian Edelman. Edelman spent 11 seasons in the league, catching 620 passes for 6,822 yards and 36 touchdowns.

He spent his entire career with the New England Patriots, spending many of those years as legendary quarterback Tom Brady’s favorite target. Edelman talked with Crosby about the first time he met Brady and what it was like catching passes from him.

“I would always hear that Tom would go out to L.A.; he lived out here in the offseason." Edelman said. "He’d throw to Randy [Moss], he’d throw to Wes [Welker], so I told my agent, I was too scared to ask him.

“I was like, ‘Yo, tell Tom I’m out here, I’m going to move out here.’ I’d never been to L.A. I’m from the Bay; I came here to Disneyland once, but I’ve never really been here. I move up, move to L.A., and he called me one time randomly, like five weeks into me being here, and I go, and we were running. He ran me like a f---ing dog. We ran, like, 70 routes, two-minute drill style where he would be out there.”

Edelman described how Brady would line him up and have him run routes, simulating an actual game.

“He goes, ‘Alright, Julian, you’re the X,’ so I go, and I’m like 10 routes in going as hard as I can for Tom f---ing Brady. I catch it, and I think it’s over. It’s an in-line in-cut, and I’m panting like a golden retriever chasing balls. He goes, ‘No, there was a flag on that play. Let’s go run it back; someone jumped offsides.’ He did it, like, three more times.”

Edelman continued to describe how Brady challenged him in this throwing session, wanting to see how Edelman would react when he was tired and under adverse conditions.

Brady, who is expected to become a minority owner of the Raiders, challenged his players to be as great as he was. This worked on Edelman, who helped the Patriots win three Super Bowls.
