Do the Raiders Have to Add a WR?

The Las Vegas Raiders have multiple talented wide receivers, but do they need to add to that position still?

The Las Vegas Raiders had one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL in 2023.

Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers were both ultra-reliable targets for Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O’Connell last season. O’Connell is competing with free agent acquisition Gardner Minshew for the starting spot in 2024.

Whoever gets the nod will have Adams and Meyers again to make big plays in the passing game.

But do the Raiders still need to add another wide receiver this offseason? There are many factors to consider when answering that question.

The Las Vegas Raiders could still add another wide receiver to elevate their offense in 2024.

The Las Vegas Raiders could still add another wide receiver to elevate their offense in 2024.

One of those factors is the release of Hunter Renfrow. Renfrow was the ever-reliable slot target for the Silver and Black for five seasons. A Pro Bowler in 2021 with a 1,000-yard season, Renfrow struggled with injuries and inconsistent play in the last two seasons, which led to his release.

With his release, the Raiders must decide whether to find an outside candidate to fill Renfrow’s role or have second-year speedster Tre Tucker slide into the slot. Tucker was seldom used in his rookie season, garnering 34 targets and catching 19 of them.

Tucker was an influential player when he was utilized in the offense as a third option. He averaged 17.4 yards per reception and was often used as a deep threat. Will this coaching staff and new Offensive Coordinator, Luke Getsy, increase his role in 2024?

Speaking of Getsy, the new scheme could also dictate how aggressive the Raiders are in acquiring another receiver. Getsy’s Chicago Bears ran the ball on 42% of their plays last season, which tied for fourth-most in the NFL.

If the Raiders add another receiver in free agency, some options include Odell Beckham Jr., former division rival Mike Williams, Tyler Boyd, D.J. Chark, or Marquez Valdes-Scantling. These veteran receivers could provide quality depth as a third or fourth option in the offense.

This is an incredibly deep 2024 NFL Draft class for a receiver, too. Suppose the Raiders add a receiver in the second or third round. In that case, several talented options are available, including Xavier Legette of South Carolina, Troy Franklin of Oregon, Roman Wilson of Michigan, and Malachi Corley of Western Kentucky.

The Raiders have talented receivers at the top of their depth chart. They may want to add some depth to their group if they want to elevate their offense going into 2024.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
