Raiders, League See Newly Approved Rules for 2024

The Las Vegas Raiders, along with the rest of the NFL, will see new rules in the 2024 season.

New league rules have resulted from the NFL’s annual Owners' Meetings.

As is the case annually, the league’s owners meet and discuss how they will vote on rules, often as new developments emerge from the prior season.

In the case of the 2023 season, one hot-button topic that was expected to create buzz at the meeting was the "hip-drop" tackle. This defensive maneuver involves a defender grabbing a ball carrier low, twisting their body, and bringing them to the ground, landing on their lower body.

Owners unanimously decided this was not something they wanted in the game going into the 2024 season. The rule passed, and a 15-yard penalty will be assessed to any player who is caught using this maneuver.

The hip-drop tackle became controversial when Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson used the maneuver on Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, who suffered an ankle injury and missed a significant portion of the 2023 season.

The NFL Competition Committee brought the rule to the owners, who voted to remove it from the game. Rule 12, Section 2 was amended to "eliminate a potentially dangerous tackling technique."

Las Vegas Raiders defenders will have to be careful how they tackle ball carriers so as not to commit a penalty and cost the team 15 yards.

Another rule that passed at the meetings was Rule 15, Article 1, Section 1, which allows coaches to challenge a call on the field for a third time, so long as they have at least one successful challenge. Beforehand, coaches would have to be successful on both of their first two challenges if they wanted to challenge a third play.

If Raiders Coach Antonio Pierce is in a close game and wants a play overturned, as long as he has been successful on one of his previous challenges, he will be allowed to challenge the call.

The final rule that was amended was Rule 14, Section 5, Article 2, which allows for "an enforcement of a major foul by the offense prior to a change of possession in a situation where there are fouls by both teams."

The Raiders must be aware of the new rules coming to the league in 2024 so they can be better aware of how to win games and make a return to the playoffs.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
